PERCUSSION INSTRUMENT - Mridangam There are two facets to any form of music that is melody and rhythm. Melody is produced by the singing or playing of instruments such as Violin, Piano, Flute whilst the rhythm aspect is highlighted by the percussion instruments such as Drums, Mrdangam, Rhythm pad etc. The play between the melodic rhythm and drummed rhythm gives rise to intricate cross rhythms and often affords the occasion for friendly rivalry between the melody maker and the percussionist. In a typical Carnatic music concert the rhythm accompaniment is provided mainly by the Mrdangam player. At KENSRI school under the able guidance of Mrdangam maestro Shri T A S Mani, the children are introduced to basic concepts of rhythm and tala apart from Mrdangam playing techniques in a systematic manner.
