DANCE From time immemorial, Dance and Music have been integral parts of the life of Indian people. In each and every joyous occasion, there is customarily a performance of Dance and Music or either one of the two. Correct exposure to these art forms at an early impressionable age not only helps in kindling the talent and interest of the children to the art forms but also plays a significant part in the holistic development of the personality of the children. Keeping this in mind along with importance of continuity of these traditional art forms, Bharatanatyam has been integrated into the syllabus of Kensri School . Commencing with the recitation of sloka-s with correct pronunciation, the children are trained in the practice of Adavu-s, the ABCs of Bharatanatyam, slowly graduating to performance of small sequences of Adavu-s turn leading on to the presentation of a complete piece. The Adavu-s are one facet of Bharatanatyam, the other being Abhinaya. Abhinaya is the interpretation of the meaning of the verses through different hand gestures, facial expressions along with appropriate foot movements and body postures. A combination of practical and theoretical knowledge is crucial to the understanding of the art form. The hand gestures (Hasta-s) and their application (Viniyoga-s), along with different movements (Bheda-s) of the various limbs of the body (like the head, eyes and neck), coupled with a note on Bharatanatyam and a brief look at its history, the different classical dance forms of India are all a part of the syllabus at Kensri School.
